India continues to remember Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh as one of the most courageous and influential revolutionaries of the freedom struggle. On 28 September 2026, Inqilab Manch, Gurugram, will commemorate his 119th birth anniversary with a special programme dedicated to his life, ideals, sacrifice, and enduring message to the youth of India.

Bhagat Singh was not only a revolutionary but also a deeply thoughtful reader, writer, and political thinker. His courage, commitment to justice, and willingness to sacrifice his life for the cause of freedom made him an enduring symbol of patriotism and youthful determination.

“Bombs and pistols do not make a revolution. The sword of revolution is sharpened on the whetting-stone of ideas.”
— Shaheed Bhagat Singh

Remembering a Revolutionary

Bhagat Singh was born into a family with a strong connection to India's freedom movement. From an early age, he was exposed to discussions about colonial rule, independence, and the struggle for national liberation.

The Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919 deeply affected him and strengthened his resolve to oppose British colonial rule. As he grew older, Bhagat Singh developed a remarkable interest in history, politics, philosophy, socialism, and revolutionary literature. His extensive reading helped shape his understanding of freedom—not merely as independence from colonial rule, but as a society based on justice, equality, dignity, and human freedom.

He became associated with the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) and worked alongside other young revolutionaries who sought to challenge British rule and awaken political consciousness among the people.

Courage, Sacrifice and the Voice of Revolution

In 1928, following the death of Lala Lajpat Rai after a police lathi charge during a protest against the Simon Commission, Bhagat Singh and his comrades sought to avenge his death. In the course of events, British police officer J. P. Saunders was killed in Lahore.

The following year, on 8 April 1929, Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt threw low-intensity bombs in the Central Legislative Assembly in Delhi. Their objective was not indiscriminate killing. They wanted to make their political message impossible to ignore. After the incident, they deliberately remained at the scene and surrendered so that they could use the trial and courtroom as platforms for their ideas.

Bhagat Singh's actions, writings, and statements transformed him into a powerful voice of revolutionary thought. His famous call, “Inquilab Zindabad” — Long Live the Revolution, became a rallying cry for generations.

A Martyr at Just 23

On 23 March 1931, Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar were executed in Lahore Central Jail.

They were only in their early twenties, yet their courage and conviction left an extraordinary mark on India's history. Their martyrdom inspired countless people and strengthened the spirit of resistance against colonial rule.

Bhagat Singh's legacy goes beyond his martyrdom. He continues to inspire young people to think critically, stand against injustice, serve society, and work towards a more equitable and united nation.
